Landing an interview for an accounting position is a significant achievement in such a competitive market, but the real challenge can often lie in making a lasting impression. You want to be a memorable candidate for all the right reasons.
Here are just some of the pieces of advice that I typically give my candidates when preparing them for an accountancy interview.
Dress Formally
Your appearance is the first thing interviewers notice, so dressing formally is crucial. A well-tailored outfit (free of crumbs and creases), clean shoes and a generally tidy appearance can set a positive tone for the rest of the interview. Even if the business doesn’t adhere to a strictly formal dress code, doing so for interview is still recommended. Remember, you never get a second chance to make a first impression.
Engage in Small Talk
Interviews are not just about assessing your technical skills; they are also about determining if you will fit into the company culture. Engaging in small talk can help break the ice and show that you are personable and can get along with the team. Discussing light topics like the weather, industry news or even a shared interest can make you more relatable and likable.
Be Knowledgeable About the Business
One way to stand out is by demonstrating your knowledge about the company. Research the company’s recent projects, changes and overall business environment. This shows that you are genuinely interested in the role and the company. Mentioning specific details about the company’s recent achievements or challenges can impress your interviewers and show that you have done your homework (via their website, industry titles or their social media channels).
Showcase Your Skillset
When discussing your CV, focus on your relevant skills and experiences. Avoid going into unnecessary details about unrelated jobs, like the paper round you had when you were twelve. Instead, highlight your transferable skills and how they align with the job requirements. Provide concrete examples of your experience that match the job spec. For instance, if the job requires proficiency in financial analysis, discuss a project where you successfully analysed financial data to make strategic decisions.
Ask Questions
Remember, an interview is a two-way street. It’s not just about the company assessing you; it’s also about you determining if the company is the right fit for you. Prepare thoughtful questions about the company’s culture, opportunities for progression, size and scale and future plans. Asking questions shows that you are serious about the role and are thinking long-term.
Preparing for an interview involves more than just rehearsing answers to common questions. It’s about presenting yourself as a well-rounded candidate who is not only technically proficient but also a good fit for the company’s culture.
By dressing well, engaging in small talk, being knowledgeable about the business, showcasing your relevant skills and asking insightful questions, you can make a lasting impression and increase your chances of landing the job.
