Payroll Manager

What does a typical day-to-day look like?

  • Managing the end-to-end processing of monthly and weekly payrolls for 850+ employees.

  • Leading and overseeing the Payroll team, ensuring payrolls are processed accurately and on time.

  • Managing CIS payroll for subcontractors, including verification, deductions and submissions.

  • Reviewing and approving payroll outputs before final sign-off.

  • Ensuring accurate processing of new starters, leavers, salary changes, overtime, allowances, bonuses and statutory deductions.

  • Managing payroll calendars and ensuring all deadlines are consistently met.

  • Ensuring compliance with UK payroll legislation, HMRC requirements and CIS regulations.

  • Managing statutory payments including SSP, SMP, SPP and SAP.

  • Completing and submitting HMRC returns and maintaining accurate payroll records.

  • Overseeing payroll systems and liaising with software providers to resolve issues and implement improvements.

  • Identifying opportunities to streamline processes, reduce manual work and improve payroll accuracy.

  • Supporting system upgrades, testing and integration with HR and Finance systems.

  • Providing employees with clear guidance on payroll-related matters, including pensions, benefits and deductions.

  • Working closely with HR on onboarding, benefits and changes to employee compensation.

  • Supporting month-end and year-end processes, including payroll reconciliations and reporting.

  • Collaborating with Finance on cost analysis, forecasts and audit requirements.

  • Preparing payroll cost reports and analysis for senior leadership.

 

Who are we looking for?

  • Proven experience managing high-volume, multi-frequency payrolls.

  • Strong knowledge of UK payroll legislation, HMRC requirements and CIS regulations.

  • Previous experience managing and developing a Payroll team.

  • Excellent understanding of statutory payments and payroll compliance.

  • CIPP qualification would be highly desirable.

  • Experience working with integrated HRIS and Finance systems.

  • Strong payroll software and Microsoft Excel skills.

  • Exceptional accuracy and attention to detail.

  • Excellent organisational skills with the ability to manage competing priorities and strict deadlines.

  • Strong communication and stakeholder management skills.

  • A discreet and trustworthy approach when handling confidential information.

  • Ability to work effectively under pressure in a fast-paced environment.

  • A proactive mindset with a focus on process improvement and payroll efficiency.
