Meet The Recruiter: Monica Lochrie

How did you get in to recruitment?

I studied Marketing at University but realised on completion that this wasn’t a direction I wanted to take my career. I got chatting to some recruiters at a networking event, and they told me about what they did – I thought this sounded like something suited to me as I am a people person. I noticed HR Consultancy were recruiting for their Graduate Scheme so I applied and have been here 4 years now recruiting for the HR market.

What was your dream job as a child?  

I wanted to be a teacher for the majority of my childhood which then changed to a midwife. However, after doing a ‘work placement’ at 15 in an office environment within a global business, I realised that I wanted to work in Business and be able to make decisions on a daily basis, engage with interesting people and learn about how companies work.

How do you commute?

I drive to the train station as I live in a small town and then get the train from there. I enjoy this as it allows me to switch off after a busy day in the office.

What does a typical day look like?

I usually arrive in the office around 8.30am and have breakfast while checking my emails and making my ‘to-do’ list for the day. After this, it can be a mix of business development, client meetings and candidate interviews. I also organise networking events and give career advice to graduates and experienced HR professionals looking for their next move.

What’s the best part of your job?

I enjoy meeting people – whether this be candidates or clients, I love getting out of the office or away from my desk and finding out how I can help someone. Whether it be a candidate looking for their next career move, or someone who has been made redundant and giving them support to get back into work or a client who is looking for the perfect addition to their team. I enjoy giving professional advice and being able to build trusting relationships.

What’s been your biggest success so far?

I took up running at the beginning of this year and completed my first 10k race in August, and I’m currently training for my next one in October!

What do you like to do in your free time?

My down-time is important to me as I am a real family person so I enjoy planning days away with my husband and my dog whether this be climbing hills across Scotland or visiting new places. I love getting together with my mum or my friends and going for nice food and cocktails.

I also enjoy interior design and often can be found browsing the aisles in Next Home at the weekend (much to my husband’s despair) and snooping about on Pinterest and Instagram for ideas.

What is most important to you?

Happiness. Whether in my personal or professional life, I want to be happy and enjoy what I do and who I do it with.

I read this with great pleasure as I worked with Monica years ago before she found her niche. I never doubted she would be successful once she found her place in the work world. Very much a people person I wish her all the very best in all she does in the future. H R Consultancy are extremely lucky if all their employees have the same dedicated work ethic as Monica.
